Music has a unique way of touching our emotions and shaping our mental health. At our recent Gen Win Youth Activity, attendees discovered how music therapy can support wellness and mindfulness in everyday life. Thanks to Aaron Hill, who introduced his 5M music therapy approach, participants experienced firsthand how music, mindfulness, meditation, and mantras come together to create a powerful tool for mental health.

Exploring the 5M Music Therapy Approach
Aaron Hill’s 5M method stands for music, mindfulness, meditation, mindfulness, and mantras. This approach blends sound and mental focus to help individuals relax, reduce stress, and improve emotional balance. Each “M” plays a role in building wellness:
Music creates a connection to emotions and memories.
Mindfulness encourages being present and aware of feelings without judgment.
Meditation helps calm the mind and body.
Mantras use repeated words or sounds to focus attention and promote positive thinking.
During the workshop, Aaron guided attendees through exercises that combined these elements. The interactive jam session was a highlight, where everyone used instruments to create rhythms together. This hands-on experience showed how music can build community and support mental health in a fun, engaging way.

How Music Therapy Supports Mental Health and Mindfulness
Research shows that music therapy can lower anxiety, improve mood, and enhance focus. For young people and parents alike, incorporating music into daily routines offers a simple path to better wellness. Here are some practical benefits shared during the workshop:
Reduces stress: Playing or listening to music can lower cortisol levels, the hormone linked to stress.
Improves mood: Music triggers the release of dopamine, a chemical that makes us feel happy.
Enhances mindfulness: Focusing on sounds and rhythms helps quiet distracting thoughts.
Builds social bonds: Group music activities create a sense of belonging and support.
These benefits make music therapy a valuable tool for anyone looking to improve mental health and practice mindfulness. The workshop also emphasized that you don’t need to be a musician to enjoy these effects—simple activities like drumming, singing, humming, or listening mindfully can make a difference.
